Living for God's Glory

One of the most important composers in the history of music was Johann Sebastian Bach. Bach developed the formal rules of music theory that formed the foundation of western music. One of the amazing things about him was that he inscribed every piece of music he wrote with the letters S.D.G. which stands for Soli Deo Gloria, or to God alone be the glory. Every piece that he wrote was written to glorify God. What a great reminder! Everything we do should be for the glory of God.

"The aim and final end of all music should be none other than the glory of God and the refreshment of the soul."

- J. S. Bach

Many people like to ask the question, "what is the meaning of life?" For Christians, the answer is not a mystery. The meaning of my life and the meaning of yours is to bring God glory. In fact, everything that exists was created for this singular purpose. The glory of God is what everything should be about. In the movie Chariots of Fire, Eric Liddell's father tells him this:

"You can glorify God by peeling a potato if you peel it to perfection."

Everything we do should be to the best of our ability so that we can glorify God through it. 1 Corinthians 10:31 says, "So, whether you eat or drink, or whatever you do, do all to the glory of God." This is such a great reminder to do everything we do with excellence. Everything we do should be for God and when we are successful we should give all of the credit to God. It's all about him!

Here are some questions to discuss as a family:

What things are you doing with excellence for the Lord?

What are some practical ways that you can give God glory in your life?
