The Value of Life

What gives life value?

For Christians, life is a gift from God. Every person on the face of the earth was made by him and for him. The value we place on life comes from the fact that each person has been made in the image of God. There is nothing else in all of creation like mankind. Yet the problem, found in Romans 3:23, is that we have all sinned and fallen short of the glory of God. Does our sin reduce our value?

If I ask you about the value of a gallon of milk you would be able to give me a price that you would pay for it. So what is the price that someone would be wiling to pay for a human life? How much are we worth to God now that we have sinned? Well the answer is found in the Bible. Romans 5:8 says that, "God shows his love for us in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us." The God who created us valued us so much that he gave his life for us to redeem us. I think it's safe to say that our lives are valuable to God.

No Greater Love

Jesus laid down his life for us and showed us the greatest love imaginable. Jesus told his followers this in John 15:13: "Greater love has no one than this, that someone lay down his life for his friends." Jesus modeled this for us perfectly. Every day in our country and around the world there are brave men and women who serve and protect us. Many have given their lives for us and for our freedom. As we celebrate Veterans Day this weekend be sure to thank those who have served us.
