Is Jesus enough?

An important phrase from the reformers is solus christus, which means Christ Alone.

Jesus said to him, “I am the way, and the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.

John 14:6

Jesus is very clear that he is the only way to salvation. There is nothing you can do to perform your way into heaven. There is no other person that you can turn to and there's no other path that can lead you there. Salvation is through Christ alone. There are a lot of people today that think that all roads lead to the same place. In other words, they think that all religions lead to salvation. This false worldview is known as Universalism. This worldview teaches that everyone will be saved no matter what you believe.

In contrast, Jesus said this in Matthew 7:13-14: "Enter by the narrow gate. For the gate is wide and the way is easy that leads to destruction, and those who enter by it are many. For the gate is narrow and the way is hard that leads to life, and those who find it are few."

The path to eternal life is very narrow. The only way we are saved is by grace through faith in Christ alone. Prior to the reformation the church taught that you had to also do good works prescribed by the priests. They also taught that you needed to confess your sins to a priest to be forgiven. These ideas were clearly man-made and not found in scripture. The reformation reminded us of the truth we find in the Bible. We don't need to add anything else. When it comes to our salvation, Jesus is enough.
