The Mission of the Church
The mission of the church is to carry out the mission of God. Jesus came to seek and save the lost (Lk 19:10). He told us to make disciples, baptize them and teach them to obey his commands (Mt 28:19-20). What did he command? He said the greatest commandments are that we love God and love others (Mt 22:34-40). It would seem that the mission of the church is to exemplify love through obedience to Christ and sharing Christ with others. We are called to be selfless and outwardly focused. “Missions” is not just a department or program in the church, it is what the church exists to do. When we gather together it is to worship God and then be equipped so that we can subsequently be sent out to share Christ with others. It is easy for us to lose this focus.
